  1. A placebo is made to look exactly like a real drug but is made of an inactive substance, such as a starch or sugar. Placebos are now used only in research studies (see The Science of Medicine). Despite there being no active ingredients, some people who take a placebo feel better. Some others develop "side effects.".
  2. Although not apparent until week 9, the donepezil hydrochloride groups were rated higher than the placebo group ( for the 5-mg/d group, for mg/d group vs for the placebo group) at end point, and this difference failed to dissipate completely after donepezil use was discontinued during the 3-week washout period.
